More than 70 years have passed since Indonesia and France established diplomatic relations in 1947. Recently, French President Emmanuel Macron was greeted with a grand state welcome in Jakarta, a symbol of the strong friendship and mutual respect between the two countries. Approximately 3,000 students from various levels, donning neat attire and waving both Indonesian and French flags, filled the grounds of Merdeka Palace and the area surrounding the National Monument (Monas). As President Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron made their way to the palace from Monas, they were accompanied by tight security, enhancing the ceremonial atmosphere of the occasion.
Upon arriving at Merdeka Palace, President Macron warmly met the students and was officially welcomed by President Prabowo Subianto. The two leaders strolled together to the ceremonial grounds under the playing of national anthems and a 21-gun salute as a formal acknowledgment. The inspection of the honor guard under Jakarta’s clear blue skies was witnessed by ministers from the Red and White Cabinet, as well as Prabowo’s son, Ragowo Hediprasetyo. Macron’s itinerary also included visits to the Military Academy in Magelang and the Borobudur Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcasing the shared cultural and educational values of Indonesia and France.
Following the welcome ceremony, the two heads of state engaged in a closed-door bilateral meeting to discuss strategic partnerships, highlighting the deepening ties between Indonesia and France. The visit not only strengthened the diplomatic relations but also fostered cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two nations.
